Our approach

The Waymark Framework

Information enables business. The Waymark Framework provides a continuous approach to aligning information, people, processes and technology with what the organisation is trying to achieve.

The Waymark Framework with 'Information enables business' at the centre, showing Purpose, Information, Flow, Ecosystem, Understanding & Control, and Value as a continuous cycle, surrounded by external drivers such as people, technology, regulation, risk, markets, customers, competition and growth.

How to read it

Direction, not doctrine

The Framework is a way of looking at the organisation as a connected information ecosystem — starting with what the business is trying to achieve and continually testing whether everything around it still supports that purpose.

The aim is not to create more governance. It is to reduce friction by making information, processes, people and technology work together — with appropriate controls built into the way the organisation operates.

The Waymark approach

The Framework is not a compliance checklist, maturity model or prescriptive methodology. It is broader than information governance alone, and different organisations need different answers.

Instead, it provides a structured way to understand the relationships between business strategy, information, data, people, processes, technology, risk and value — and to identify where those relationships have become disconnected.

The Framework

Six connected areas

Each area asks a different question, but none operates in isolation. Together they provide a view of how effectively information enables the business.

Know where you're going.

Purpose

Everything starts with what the organisation is trying to achieve. Purpose and strategy provide the direction against which information, process, people and technology decisions can be assessed.

Know what you need.

Information

Information is the mechanism that enables business activity. Understanding what the organisation needs to know, create and use helps connect strategy with the decisions and activities needed to deliver it.

Make it move.

Flow

Information should move naturally through the organisation as processes require. Data and information created in one activity should remain usable by the next person, process or machine without unnecessary duplication, intervention or loss of meaning.

Make the parts work together.

Ecosystem

People, processes, data, systems, technology and AI are interconnected. Decisions should strengthen the organisation as a whole rather than optimise one component while creating friction somewhere else.

Know what you have and what you can do with it.

Understanding & Control

Organisations need to understand what information they have, where it is, who is responsible for it, what it is worth, what rights and obligations apply, and how it should be used and protected.

Make information work for the business.

Value

The goal is not governance for its own sake. Information should help the organisation make better decisions, operate efficiently, manage risk, identify opportunities, innovate and grow.

Continuous improvement

Built for change

The Framework is not something an organisation completes.

Organisations change constantly. They grow, enter new markets, introduce new technology, respond to new regulation and develop new ways of serving their customers.

Each change can alter the information the business needs, how that information flows and the systems, processes and controls needed to support it.

The Waymark Framework provides a way to continually ask whether the organisation's information ecosystem remains aligned with where the business is going — and where new opportunities or risks are emerging.

Supporting principles

How the Framework is applied

Six principles guide the way Waymark approaches information, governance and organisational change.

Business first

Information and technology decisions should support what the organisation is trying to achieve.

Design for flow

Information should work across the organisation and retain the context needed for people and machines to use it.

Build governance in

Embed appropriate controls into information, processes and technology rather than adding unnecessary bureaucracy afterwards.

Think ecosystem

Optimise the organisation as a whole, not individual systems, teams or processes in isolation.

Know your information

Understand what information exists, what it means, what it is worth, what you can do with it and what obligations apply.

Design for change

Build an information ecosystem that can adapt as the organisation, technology and the world around it evolve.

The outcome

A business that can move forward with confidence.

Better alignment makes information easier to use, decisions easier to make and change easier to manage — reducing unnecessary friction while creating space for opportunity and growth.

Next step

Where is information creating friction in your organisation?

The Waymark Framework can help identify where things have become disconnected and where better alignment could reduce risk, improve efficiency and create opportunity.
